Course Overview
Ever since you were young you have known that you want to work with people, helping them through some of the toughest times in their lives, being the rock they can cling to in the darkest of nights. People come to you when they need reassurance, you don’t judge, you don’t preach, you are just there to help. If this sounds like you, a career in Health and Social Care may be calling to you. This course will help you to develop the knowledge, skills and values that you will need in order to excel in this interesting and challenging career.
You will complete a number of units as part of the course, which include:
- Communication: the processes and skills of communication and how they apply to a range of people with differing communication needs.
- Creative and therapeutic activities: you will learn how creativity and therapeutic activities can be used to support people with various needs.
- Anatomy and Physiology: how cells, tissues, organs and organ systems all work together, along with what might go wrong and how to care for people who are ill.
- Individual needs: understanding how people’s needs vary across a diverse group of people and how to meet these needs in a caring and efficient fashion.
- Vocational Experience in a health, social care or early years setting: you will be supported in choosing where to complete a 2-week work placement in an appropriate health, social care or early years setting. You will complete an evidence booklet and be able to put the theory you have learnt in the classroom into practice.

Minimum Entry Requirements
- Three GCSEs at Grade 4 including:
- Grade 3 in GCSE English Language
- Grade 3 in GCSE Maths
Students who have not achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths must retake these as part of their study programme.

Why choose this course?
You will enjoy this course if you have always considered yourself as good with people, you want to be of help to people, or you want a career in Health and Social Care.
During the year there will be a number of extracurricular activities for you to participate in. In previous years, we have had trips to the Langdon Down Museum of Learning Disabilities, Thorpe Park, and we have had numerous speakers from places such as Addenbrookes, representatives of various Universities and apprenticeship providers, along with local Health and Social Care providers such as from Wintercomfort, Jimmy’s and Darwin Nurseries.
Skills you'll gain
As part of this course, you will develop the essential skills, knowledge and values for a career in Health and Social Care, such as good communication skills, an understanding of how the body works and what might go wrong and a strong feeling of the importance of valuing difference and individuality.
After Long Road
In the past, our students have gone on to many different areas, be it progressing into the Level 3 course and from there to careers such as:
- Midwifery
- Nursing
- Social work
- Primary teaching
- Police force
Some students have progressed to specialist courses at other institutions, such as Early Years qualifications, and then onto careers such as Early Years Practitioner.
Students often say that the Level 2 qualification gives them time to settle in as a Sixth Form student and that they then do better than they feel they would have done if they had gone straight onto a Level 3 qualification.
I liked the Level 2 course because it was mainly coursework-based, which put me at ease. Having the opportunity to do two weeks of health and social care work experience helped me to figure out my future career options. I loved beginning Level 3 as I felt that the Level 2 had given me an extra year of learning. I also had an understanding of some topics as we had touched on them in the Level 2 course
