Parliament Week competition winners announced!
Congratulations to Long Road student, Lorenzo Reserva, winner of our maths competition; and to Charlotte Swanbury from Cottenham Village College, winner of our Parliament Realised art competition!
Prior to the Christmas 2023 break other schools and colleges in East Anglia were invited to take part in the Politics department’s Parliament Week 2023 art and maths competitions alongside Long Road students, with the aim of getting young people to engage with Parliament through other subjects in the curriculum.
Second year student Lorenzo Reserva submitted the winning entry to the Maths competition which consisted of a critical report on the best electoral system for Westminster general elections using his own mathematical reasoning.
The art competition entitled ‘Parliament Realised’ resulted in 4 external entries, with 2 each coming from Cottenham School and The College of West Anglia in Kings Lynn. The students that entered were Charlotte Swanbury, Amelia Chapman, Lara Quinn and Megan Green.
Charlotte Swanbury from Cottenham was awarded the winner's prize in assembly last week whilst the other 3 students received certificates for taking part and a post-Christmas chocolate treat. I would like to thank the students that entered the competitions and teachers Catherine Roth of Cottenham and Sophie Sheffield of the College of West Anglia for encouraging their cohort to engage in the competition. I hope that this is the first of many such opportunities to develop a link between young people and their Parliament.
Unfortunately, as this beautiful artwork might be used in future assessments, we can only show you a small snippet of the work produced! But we hope you enjoy these details:
